We’re always looking to make some sort of impact on the world, and finding our own personal style is a big part of that. This doesn’t mean you have to do the rockstar thing and dye your hair a wild color… or put together an outfit from whatever you find in a thrift store. It can be done simply, for example, by going to a place like VKNagrani designer clothing.

But that’s not the only answer. To define your own personal style, here are some steps to take and questions to ask yourself to help you come up with your own signature look:

1. What Do You Want From Your Style?

Before you decide what look you want, it’s important to decide what you want from your new style. Are you trying to make your bosses notice you? Impress women on the dating scene? Take a break from your work clothes? Or just give off an air of confidence wherever you go? If your biggest need is professional suits for work, for example, it would be a waste of time spending hours going through the casual section in your favorite store.

2. What Looks Best On You?

The clothes that look good on a professional model or athlete in a heavily photoshopped magazine spread, or are the current fashion craze on the runway, won’t always be what looks best on you personally. You may even regret buying that trendy new item a few months down the line when it’s taking up space in the back of your closet. Discovering what looks best on your body is all part of finding your own style. ArtofManliness.com explains how attributes including height, weight, age, and skin and hair color affect the clothing which men choose to suit them best and either accent or draw attention away from their positive or negative characteristics. Experiment a little, get some feedback from someone you trust (both male and female friends), and ask store clerks for their opinion. Having their expert eyes on you will help you find what looks best… and what to avoid.

3. Work With What You Have

Take a good look at your current wardrobe. How much does it match the style you are going for? Can it be adjusted in any way to do achieve your style goals? You may just find you already have more than you thought to work with because you’ve been subconsciously buying clothes to match the look you’ve always wanted. If not, start clearing out your closet. Keep whatever you need for work and some casual stuff for your down time, and donate the clothes you no longer need.

4. Start With the Basics

There is no need to run out and buy thousands of dollars’ worth of designer suits right away. Take your time. It’s much better to start with the small things, maybe a few new shirts or pairs of pants and a jacket. This will not only prevent you from blowing all your money on clothes that don’t suit you, but you can experiment and figure out what you like and what works for you. CheatSheet.com has a few suggestions on where to start.

5. Learn From the Masters

Finding your own unique style doesn’t mean you can’t gain inspiration from others. All creative types do it to some extent, including fashion designers. This doesn’t mean copying your favorite actor’s look down to the socks and underwear he buys. But ask yourself, what about these men gives them such a confident image and makes them seem so comfortable in their own skin? If you see someone you admire, whether a celebrity or just someone you know, with an article of clothing you think would work with your style, find out where they got it from—or find a similar substitute and add it to your own wardrobe. It’s not stealing their look, it’s adapting it to match your own personal style.

6. Don’t Forget the Small Details

It isn’t just women who have to accessorize. It may be more subtle for men, but it can make all the difference, and add an extra dimension to what you’re wearing. Depending on the look you’re going for, some unique cufflinks, a tie, and the right pair of shoes can make a good outfit great, or give it a more personal touch. Don’t forget about investing in some good personal grooming products, and of course some cologne. (Not the cheap stuff.) Small pieces of attention to detail like this can make the difference between looking professional and authoritative and looking like you’re a little kid playing with the big boys.

Some guys may see it as a struggle to find their own unique look but discovering your style is all about putting in the effort, experimenting to find what works for you, and finding your style icons to emulate. It takes a bit of time, but once you do find it, it will earn you more compliments and give you the confidence you need in your daily life.
